Sterling silver is comprised of 92.5% silver and 7.5% an alloy, (usually copper). The alloy is necessary to help slow down the natural tarnishing process as well as strengthen the metal. The higher the silver content, the quicker the tarnishing process will occur.
Silver will turn dark or even black as a reaction to oxygen in the air. This is known as oxidation. Cleaning your jewelry after use and storing in air tight containers will help prevent or slow down the oxidation process.
There are many other factors which can cause blackening of your silver. Some of the major causes are certain medications, certain foods including salty foods, eggs, mayonnaise and acidic items, contact with bleach, as well as salt water (the ocean), suntan lotions and moisturizers.
